about
Te Kiwi was inspired by the Māori story of how the kiwi, the national bird of New Zealand (Aotearoa), lost its wings to defend the forest, and the consequences for the other birds who refused to do so.

Te Kiwi
Lyrics and Music by A. Carter, A Johnson, R. A. Paterson, & B. A. Ion
(Verse 1)
Deep in the forest, death and disease, Tāne Mahuta,
Ngā Rākau bleeding is all he can see, harurutanga
On his order the children of flight whakaminea
Take on the task, a question is asked
Silence
(Chorus)
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
(Verse 2)
Tear the evil out from the dirt, whakamatea
Break its body, go do your worst, mauri ora
Hunt the darkness, swallow and kill, apuaputia
Take on the task, a question is asked
Silence
E Tui, pukeko, pīpīwharauroa
Don’t give me excuses
Tui, pukeko, pīpīwharauroa
How dare you refuse this?
(Chorus)
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
(Solo - Ion)
Now I curse you, all the traitors
Only one bird heeds the call
Thus I curse you, all the failures
Kiwi, rise above them all
(Chorus)
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
Call on the kiwi
Karangatia te kiwi
